Later today, I will be driving up to St. Louis to see The Tallest Man on Earth play a concert. Ever since my friend Chuck introduced me to this band, they have held a special place in my heart. Much like Bob Dylan, the vocals are very distinct and unique. I’ve encountered people who love or hate their music, but no one who falls in the middle. With the anticipation of the concert growing, I decided that in my blog entry this week, I would discuss some of the most memorable concerts that I’ve ever attended.
Radiohead puts on one of the best live shows that I have ever seen. Their stage presence and energy is contagious. You can tell that these guys have been doing this for a while, and that they know what they’re doing.
I got to see Arcade Fire right after they won a Grammy. Needless to say, I was worried that they would have lost their passion or forgot where they came from, but this was about as far from the case as possible. These guys were so humble and still all about the music.
I think everyone should see a hardcore concert at some point in his or her life. Period. There is nothing like taking part in a mosh pit, crowd surfing, or being absolutely terrified about the chaos happening around you or on the stage ahead of you.
Getting to this concert was one the biggest achievements of my life. I drove from Springfield, MO to Denver, CO overnight and didn’t sleep for around 48 hours just to make it happen. There aren’t many bands that I would endure that type of weekend for, but Sigur Ros is definitely on the short list. Sigur Ros has, in my opinion, arguably the most beautiful music that I’ve heard. Their lyrics aren’t in English, but that doesn’t detract from the experience at all, and in fact for me enhances the beauty.
Sufjan Steven was also a strain to get to. Driving to Kansas City after work and driving back after the show, but it was a special night. The Sufjan was the most intimate concert that I’ve been to. He was playing to a sold out venue, but it felt like it was Sufjan playing to a few of his closest friends at his apartment.
